Boaters work to stay afloat amid a tide of high gas prices – Times Union

MAYFIELD –  Tom DiCaprio is a veteran boating enthusiast but he did something he hasn’t done before this year.

Before re-launching his 36-foot Larson cabin cruiser on Great Sacandaga Lake earlier this summer, he purchased 80 gallons associated with gas at a nearby service station and laboriously, using several gas cans, carried them into the boat to top off their two tanks that hold 230 gallons.
“What are you going to do? ” he asked. “Everyone is a little more careful. ”

The idea was to save some money by getting the fuel at a roadside gas station rather than a marina, which typically costs more.

His story is emblematic of how boaters, and the particular vast recreational boating industry which supports communities along Sacandaga, Lake George and other waterfront spots, are coping with record high fuel prices.

With prices approaching $7-per-gallon for the ethanol-free premium gas that many boaters use, people are usually exercising caution as well as standing watch for ways to keep the costs of their hobby from sinking them financially.

But they aren’t staying off the water.

Participation in sailing, like other forms associated with outdoor recreation, remains as strong as it was at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according in order to those in the industry.

Unlike other outdoor pursuits like hiking or bicycling, however, power boating is costly, not just for the price of entry (i. e. buying a boat), but also for the admittedly prodigious amounts of gas that most vessels consume.

Boaters who own crafts ranging from cabin cruisers like DiCaprio’s to smaller Boston Whaler-style outboards and even personal watercraft like Jet Skis can easily spend hundreds in order to thousands of dollars on gas for a few days upon the water.

So instead than abandoning the sport, boaters are taking fewer outings, and they are adopting strategies like searching out lower gas prices and taking shorter trips.

Many are simply heading out on the water and tossing an anchor, staying in one spot or “rafting, ” that is, tying up to other boats for impromptu gatherings rather than steaming up and down their lake or river of choice.

“Is it going in order to stop me? It’s not going to stop me, ” said Scott Lawler, who has a 25-foot Barletta pontoon boat.
“But it is three times the amount of money it was, absolutely, ” he said.

Typically, Lawler said he would cruise the particular 25 miles from his mooring on Kaatskill Bay on the east end of Lake George to Ticonderoga on the north end.

Three years ago that trip would cost about $100 for the 40 gallons associated with fuel it burned.

Now, it’s a $300 journey, so Lawler stays closer to home.

Boaters are usually also being choosy about when they visit their floating homes-away-from-home, as DiCaprio describes his vessel.

Three-day weekends like Memorial Day and Fourth of July remained busy, but some have been staying home around the off weekends, said Scott Croft, vice president of public affairs for the Boat Owners Association associated with The United States, or BoatUS, which is such as the AAA membership group for boaters.

Their statistics bear that out.

They offer a towing service, similar to AAA, and it gives an indication of how many people are on the particular water on any given day nationally.

Their call centers saw a 22 percent increase during Memorial Day time weekend, but then dropped 30 percent. The tow service gets about 80, 000 calls each year, nationally.

“What people were doing was they were holding back on fuel after Memorial Day, ” stated Croft who noted that July 4th was also the busy period.

Indeed, higher gas prices or not, there are plenty of boats on the water, at least in the greater Capital Region.

The state Canal Corp., which operates the Erie and Champlain canals, tracks each time a vessel goes through a lock on the waterway.

From the start of the season through July 5,   there were 13, 795 trips this year locks in the eastern Erie plus Champlain canals, up 17 percent from the 11, 779 trips during same period in 2021.

Statewide upon the entire canal system, including the western sections toward Rochester and Buffalo, the increase was 2 percent, with 24, 917 to 25, 505 outings this year.

It’s unclear, though, how far those boats traveled and some may have stayed close to home.

And in River George, they have recorded $1, 102, 839. 57 in registration fees by June 30 this 12 months, compared to $985, 854. 85  by June 30 last year, said Dave Wick, executive director in the Lake George Park Commission. Boaters on the particular lake are supposed in order to register their boats.

The weather, which has been mostly good, also helps keep boats on the water, said Croft.

He echoed the thoughts of The future actor and Lawler, saying people are attached to their vessels and boating, citing friendships they’ve made and the fun times they’ve had on the water.

“People possess worked their whole lives to get a boat, ”  said Croft.

The adaptations take numerous forms.

Along the particular Atlantic coast, for example , deep sea fishermen may double up, or take turns going on one another’s boat rather than their own craft, in order to save gas money. And they won’t venture because far from shore to conserve fuel.

People are still buying boats, added Mark O’Dell, marketing manager at Alpin Haus’s marine division and owner of a 23-foot Rinker Bowrider boat equipped with a V8 engine plus 50-gallon fuel tank.

Like Lawler, though, he now thinks twice before zipping up and down the length of Great Sacandaga where he keeps their boat. Staying away through the water, though, is not in the cards.

“If it’s in your blood, it’s in your own blood, ” said O’Dell.
