State Rep. Daniel P. Troy, D-Willowick, this week announced that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is offering $500, 000 from the Waterways Safety Fund to provide education and safety equipment for school districts, universities, nonprofits, plus other eligible organizations.
The department is also offering a free, in-person grant workshop with remote options available.
“As an elected official in a lakefront district, I encourage local eligible entities to take advantage of these available dollars to help increase awareness of how to more safely enjoy the wonderful benefits of our Great Lake Erie, ” Troy stated in a news release.
Funding ranges through $1, 000 to $30, 000 with a grantee cost share or in-kind contribution of 25 percent. Grants support the purchasing of safety equipment such as kayaks, life jackets and trailers.
The application deadline is Dec. 1.
The funding is made available through the Waterways Safety Fund, which comes from a share of the state motor fuel tax, watercraft registration and titling fees, and funding from the United States Coast Guard.
